The San Leandro Historical Society, the San Leandro Library, and the San Leandro History Museum present THE APOLOGY at the Historic Bal Theatre. This documentary, featuring the stories of more than 20 Russell City residents and their descendants, investigates an incident in the 1960s when Alameda County and the City of Hayward dismantled the entire community of Russell City, pushing 1,400 residents out of their homes and off their land - all to claim the 200 acres for an industrial park. The film uses archival footage, animated photos, and illustrations to document a vibrant community and its destruction and to explore the historical significance of an apology.
Stay after the film for a Q&A with filmmaker Mimi Chakarova and producer Aisha Knowles.
In the theater lobby, the San Leandro History Museum will display their traveling exhibit Redlining and Housing Discrimination in San Leandro, with a new interpretive panel on the relationship between redlining and the history of Russell City. This exhibit may be viewed before or after the film.
